Thank You Lord for the revealed things…
There’s a verse in Deuteronomy 29:29 that is very intriguing to me. It says, “The hidden things belong to the Lord our God, but the revealed things belong to us and our children forever, so that we may follow all the words of this law.”
I first stumbled on this verse when questioning the way some things transpired that were hard to understand. But as the verse states, “The hidden things belong to the Lord…” meaning, we’re not always going to understand everything that happens. But the Lord can be trusted. I’ve come to know He is good and faithful– always. So I’m comforted by these words.
Thankfully, not everything is hidden however. “…the revealed things belong to us.”
Simple yet profound.
I like the definition of revealed. It means to make something previously unknown known. And isn’t that how salvation or anything from the Lord happens? I didn’t know about salvation, and then it was revealed to me (to my heart). I didn’t understand righteousness or who I was in Christ, and then it was revealed to me. As Paul said, “the eyes of my understanding were enlightened” (Ephesians 1:18).
King David had a similar testimony. In 2 Samuel, chapter 7, David tells the prophet Nathan that he is saddened by the fact that he lives in a house of cedar and the Lord’s presence is in a tent. He states that he wants to build a house for the Lord. And in response, God lets David know that his house (his lineage) will be forever and a dynasty of kings (ultimately leading to the King of kings, Jesus) will reign always.
In David’s prayer of gratitude, he says, “Because of your word and according to your will, You have revealed all these great things to your servant. Since you, Lord of Armies, God of Israel, have revealed this to your servant when you said, ‘I will build a house for you.’ Therefore your servant has found the courage to pray this prayer to you” (2 Samuel 7:21,27).
David said because the Lord revealed things previously unknown to him, it emboldened him to pray and embrace the Lord’s words. I love this because I have experienced this too.
Revealed to empower.
Once I learned God’s word on salvation and our righteousness in Christ, no devil in hell could take it from me (although they tried)! Pastor Mark Hankins often says information can be stolen from you, but revelation is yours forever (my paraphrase). And it’s so true.
Paul explained this perfectly in his first letter to the Corinthians. They most likely, like us, wrestled with understanding the things and ways of God. So he told them, “But as it is written, ‘What no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human has conceived– God has prepared these things for those who love him.’ Now God has revealed these things to us by the Spirit, since the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God” (1 Corinthians 2:9-10).
In other words, there’s so much we don’t know or comprehend. Yet, God isn’t trying to hide everything from us. On the contrary, by His Spirit, the Lord wants to reveal things to us.
Paul went on to say we have received “…the Spirit who comes from God, so that we may understand what has been freely given to us by God” (1 Corinthians 2:12).
Please read that again.
This is exactly why we can say thank you Lord for the revealed things. Yes, there are and always will be some things that are not for us to know (hidden things). But the revealed things are so we may understand what has freely been given to us in Christ.
This alone makes my heart praise God! I know it’s still all by faith, but praise the Lord it’s not solely by faith– meaning, once my heart has seen it and believed it, it’s easy to embrace it.
Embrace what? Every promise, every word, every encouragement found in scripture. So I’ll say it again and again… Thank You Lord for the revealed things.
