“Behold, I stand at the door and knock…” (Revelation 3:20).

Behold, look, see, be aware– there is a call in the spirit for us to be more attune to the things of God than ever before. I’m familiar with this verse from Revelation 3 as you probably are too, as an invitation to salvation. Jesus stands at the door of every heart and knocks, seeking entry.

But the Word of God has many layers of spiritual understanding. Jesus wants entry to our hearts for salvation, but that’s not all. He desires entry and relationship– not just entry.

The interesting thing about a knock at the door is that it requires a response from within.

In other words, although we could ignore a knock at a literal door and pretend we’re “not home” — that isn’t okay with the things of God. He knocks because He knows where we are. There’s no hiding with God. But what many don’t understand is that His infinite love is on the other side of the invitation.

The Bible says “perfect love casts out all fear” (1 John 4:18) so we should never be afraid to answer the knock at the door. Instead, we should readily swing it open to see what God is offering or leading us to– an invitation into more.

The other interesting thing about a knock at the door is the threshold between what is and what could be.

As I was praying recently, I heard in my heart “down to the cusp” but I didn’t know what that meant, so as I usually do, I googled it. Google answered with: “You are likely thinking of the idiom ‘on the cusp’ which refers to a moment of transition– the exact point where one state or era ends and another is about to begin.”

This caught my attention.

The phrase “on the cusp” means being on the exact edge, threshold, or turning point of a significant change or event. “Behold, I stand at the door [at the threshold] and knock…”

We’ve talked about this before– a threshold is simply a point of entry. When Jesus stands at the door, He is offering entry to something new. But it’s our responsibility to accept and cross the threshold by faith. I don’t know about you but I don’t want to find out in eternity that I was “on the cusp” of something significant but out of fear or doubt, didn’t accept what God was inviting me into.

The Bible says that God knows the end from the beginning. He is the author and finisher of our faith. He leads us in paths of righteousness for the glory of His name. He has plans for us, for good and not for evil, with a future and a hope. And my favorite is Romans 8:28 which says, “We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to His purpose.”

In other words, we can trust His knock.

When Jesus knocks on our door, there must be a response from within. Without a doubt, faith will be required to cross the threshold. “Without faith it is impossible to please God, since the one who draws near to Him [responds to Him] must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6 CSB).

I don’t know what God is calling you into but I know His invitation can be trusted. There have been many times I’ve felt like God was asking me to take a step of faith when all I could see was a cliff. But when I responded and said okay God I trust You, there was suddenly solid ground beneath my feet (even if it was one plank at a time).

Looking back on my life of faith, I wouldn’t change a thing.

And that’s why it’s easier to answer the door now. When God knocks, I answer. When He stands on the other side of the threshold, I gladly take His hand and say yes knowing I’m standing on the cusp of something beautiful (and exciting).

I’ve learned to trust His faithfulness because the Lord can be trusted.

I pray you answer the knock. I pray you take a step of faith. The Lord loves you and I believe He is inviting us all into something more.
