Army of One

I recently heard a phrase that made me chuckle and sigh at the same time. It was: “I am an army of one.”

I laughed because that’s me in a nutshell. For the entirety of Mirror Ministries, it’s just been me. And this is probably true of most writers, but I’m also the business office, the book designer, product packer, equipment roady, speaker, blogger, podcaster, tech help, and the list could go on and on… which is why I also sighed.

YET, you won’t hear me complain. The journey has been (and still is) amazing. And although in the natural, the phrase “army of one” fits me to a tee, it’s not really true. John said, “For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one” (1 John 5:7). You see, none of us can claim to truly be alone when we are in Christ. It may look like (or often feel like) a one-man-band, but my help comes from heaven.

AND SO DOES YOURS.

The Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit (three in one) are the Generals, Sergeants, and Commanding Officers of this Army of “ONE” that others see. In fact, the emphasis is in the wrong place if we only look at the word one. The correct emphasis should be on the word army. An army describes a large body of persons trained and armed for war. That’s me (and you)! It’s not what is seen on the outside — it’s what’s on the inside.

In his last letter to the Corinthians, Paul prayed, “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen” (2 Corinthians 13:14). This is a short list of the equipping every believer has within them, before them, behind them, and around them. In other words, we are never really alone when we know what army we belong to.

Elisha knew this. In 2 Kings, when it looked like he and his servant were alone and surrounded by the enemy, Elisha said, “Don’t be afraid. We have more forces on our side than they have on theirs.” Then Elisha prayed, “Lord, please open [my servant’s] eyes so that he may see.” The Lord opened the young man’s eyes, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha (2 Kings 6:16-17).

THIS IS STILL TRUE TODAY.

You and I may be anointed for our gifts and callings in what looks like a one-man-army, but the enemy can’t see the army that stands with us! So whether you’re a business person, a parent, or caretaker, you are NOT alone. You are an army of ONE ANOINTING — the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!

So continue in strength today, remembering this truth! (I know I will!)
