In looking at the story of the woman at the well with Jesus, I noticed something I had not seen before.
Remember, Jesus’ disciples had left Him at the well to go into the city to get food. They were surprised when they returned and found Him talking with a woman (John 4:47). The Bible says the woman left and went to the men of her city to tell them of Jesus. Intrigued, these men headed to the well to see Him for themselves.
The disciples offered the food they had brought to Jesus, but He refused it. Previously, He had been hungry and weary from His journey, but now He seemed to be preoccupied with something else. What was it?
As the disciples pondered why He wouldn’t eat, Jesus looked toward the city and saw the men approaching who had been told of Him by the woman at the well. Looking at them, He then said to His disciples, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish the work. Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, LIFT UP YOUR EYES and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest” (John 4:34-35).
Jesus could see the men coming and suddenly they became His priority.
I think the lesson for us is evident. When you go to the mall, LOOK at the people. When you go to the grocery store, NOTICE the people. When we’re doing our own thing, don’t forget to SEE the harvest around us.
It’s so easy to get caught up in meeting our own needs that we forget Jesus came for people.
I don’t know what that’s going to look like in every situation, but I do believe Jesus wants us to see the harvest. The fields are white and ready, so let’s determine today to see what’s all around us. The harvest is ripe for picking!
Great reminder
everyday…. 🙂
I think our phones keep us from this so so so much!! Look around, people who need the love of Jesus are everywhere! Great message!
you’re so right about that! I often see people in person and realize I only thought I’d seen them recently because I follow them on social media… but it’s not the same.
